In common American parlor the Ford Mustang has been the denominator of a new class ever since its introduction in April 1964 (pony cars).

This model year that became famous for the shopping frenzy around it was named ’64 ½ by fans, since it was one of the most successful model introductions in the history of car manufacturing.

Its success was mainly due to its unique design, its price and not least its multiple options – they say that there are not two identical Mustangs (which may be a bit of an exaggeration, though). It has appeared in lots of movies since (see the “Movie Cars” section for further details) and can also boast of a number of racing trophies (Shelby GT).

According to American traditions, the car’s shape was changed every year but until 1973 we are basically talking about the first generation. This includes a wide range of almost anything between modest, joyride-proof “feeling cars” and factory racing cars. It would be impossible to list all the shapes and variations, the images attached will provide a general overview of the most typical Mustangs, with no claim to being exhaustive.

Attempts have been made to erase the second generation from the chronicles for several reasons, yet this was the car that made it possible to survive the oil crisis.

It was produced only between ’73 and’79 and in spite of its subsequent reputation only 30,000 fewer were sold of it in its first year compared to the first generation during the first 12 months of its distribution. In recent years, they have turned up from sheds and more and more of them can be found in a nice condition.

The third (1979-1993 Fox Body) and fourth (1994-2004) generations have drifted away from the original concept from the design aspect, but technically both turned out to be a success.

Those who like the more cubic style of the eighties or the bubble shapes of the nineties should feel free to make their choice from these models, they won’t be disappointed.

It was the fifth generation (2004-2014) that actually launched the retro-wave of the millennial years in the car industry. Back to the original formal character, slightly retailored with a modern edge but technically keeping the evergreen combo of the V8 and the stiff rear sway bars. This car is designed for those looking for the atmosphere of the original muscle cars in a more sophisticated form, perhaps even for daily use.
